With special guest: Animal YearsGhost of Paul Revere describe themselves as "holler folk" - not because it involves a lot of hollering, per se, but because it invokes the rich communal tradition of field hollers, with their call-and-response melodies, sing-along hooks and densely layered harmonies.
If there's one takeaway from their album, 'Monarch', it's that change is inevitable. Lovers, families, friends, instruments, sounds; they all transform with time. The key to thriving and surviving in a challenging world is to embrace those transformations, to accept them not as endings but as fresh starts. What comes next? Only time can tell. One thing's for sure, though: by opening their hearts and souls with such artistic grace and humility, The Ghost of Paul Revere have created a rich, rewarding, passionate community, one that they can count on to join them for every step of the remarkable journey that lies ahead.Smoke free. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
With special guest: Hot by ZiggyLong regarded as a haven for electric blues, power pop, and even metal, Chicago served as surprisingly fertile soil for the speedy growth of Lucky Boys Confusion. The five-piece ska-punk outfit - Kaustubh Pandav (vocals), Adam Krier (co-vocalist, guitar), Ryan Fergus (drums), Jason Shultejann (bass), and Joe Sell (guitar) - formed in 1997 when Pandav and Krier began writing songs together. The pair drew from punk, rap, and reggae to create an infectious ska-punk sound that combined Pandav's Latin melodies with Krier's Beastie Boys-influenced rap.
Recruiting members from their previous bands, Pandav and Krier formed Lucky Boys Confusion and began to perform at house parties and YMCAs in Chicago's western suburbs. The band's first recorded effort was a four-song EP, What Gets Me High, released on their own Townstyle label in 1997. The Lucky Boys' tales of suburban teen life proved popular and the band followed in 1998 with the full-length Growing Out of It, again released on Townstyle. The 17-track Growing Out of It included the four songs from What Gets Me High, along with new material written almost exclusively by the team of Pandav and Krier.
As the Lucky Boys' following grew in Chicago, "Dumb Pop Song," a single from Growing Out of It, found its way into regular rotation on Q101, Chicago's influential alternative rock station. With regular radio play, the band's fan base exploded and suburban house parties gave way to headlining gigs at the House of Blues and the legendary Metro. Fueled by the popularity of "Dumb Pop Song," Growing Out of It went on to sell over 6,000 copies. An EP, The Soapbox Spectacle, was released on Townstyle in March 2000, and the band eventually signed with Elektra Records. Lucky Boys Confusion's major-label debut, Throwing the Game, was released in May 2001, featuring the college radio favorite "Fred Astaire." With some of their hookiest material to date, Commitment followed three years later. The guys made minor waves on national radio and television with "Hey Driver," but with Elektra's subsequent demise, the band soon found itself without a label.
Undeterred, the Lucky Boys embraced the D.I.Y. aesthetic and spent the next few years opening and headlining tours relentlessly across the country. As a result, the band's underground following stayed loyal. After working on various songs on the road, in June 2006 they released the How to Get Out Alive EP, back on Townstyle, now an imprint of Reincarnate (Sony/BMG). To celebrate the EP's release, the band played a five-night stand at Chicago's Beat Kitchen before heading out on nationwide dates with Bowling for Soup, Punchline, and the Army of Freshmen. Arriving in 2009, Closing Arguments delivered a collection of B-sides and demos as well as a new song, "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us." The band returned in 2017 with a set of original songs, Stormchasers. ~ Kevin Morrissey, RoviSmoke free. All ages. Wheelchair accessible.Special needs seating call (414) 286-3205.All sales final. Context TourOriginally from Cleveland, OH, Cautious began his artistic journey at the age of seven when he picked up classical flute. His studies led him deep into the worlds of blues and jazz, and by the time he hit college in Washington, D.C., he'd added a number of other instruments to his repertoire in addition to songwriting and production. Now based in Brooklyn, Cautious is consistently working on music for both his own project and for others.
"Ever since I started playing music, it was always about the feel," says Josh Karpeh, AKA Cautious Clay. "There are a lot of things in art that you can learn by practicing or studying, but feel's not one of them. It's something you've just got to have."
It's that feel, that deep emotional intuition that fuels Cautious Clay's sound. Blending R&B, hip-hop, and experimental indie, his productions are dark and engrossing, built upon a unique combination of organic instruments, digital programming, and soulful vocals. He writes with unflinching honesty, engaging in deeply personal self-reflection with boldly vulnerable and vividly poetic lyrics. At times recalling contemporaries like James Blake or Sampha, Cautious is a profoundly modern songwriter and a forward-thinking producer, but he's also steeped in the past, quick to cite Burt Bacharach as an idol and credit Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones as ever-present influences in his artful arrangements.
"I used to think about songwriting and production as completely separate," he explains, "but when I learned how to merge those two things, that's when I was able to start creating music that really connected with people."With special guest: Remi WolfSmoke free. + special guest Daughter of SwordsJoan Shelley is a songwriter and singer who lives near Louisville, Ky., not far from where she grew up. "Like the River Loves the Sea" is her fifth album. She draws inspiration from traditional and traditionally-minded performers from her native Kentucky, as well as those from Ireland, Scotland, and England, but she's not a folksinger. Her disposition aligns more closely with that of, say, Roger Miller, Dolly Parton, or her fellow Kentuckian Tom T. Hall, who once explained-simply, succinctly, in a song-"I Witness Life."
She's not so much a confessional songwriter, although Like the River...gets closest to such subjectively emotional impressions as perhaps any album to date, and she sings less of her life and more of her place: of landscapes and watercourses; of flora and fauna; of seasons changing and years departing and the ineluctable attempt of humans to make some small sense of all-or, at best, some-of it. Her perspective and performances both have been described, apparently positively, as "pure," but there's no trace of the Pollyanna and there's little of the pastoral, either: her work instead wrestles with the possibility of reconciling, if only for a moment, the perceived "natural" world with its reflection-sometimes, relatively speaking, clear; other times hopelessly distorted-in the human heart, mind, and footprint.
Since the 2015 release of her album Over and Even, Shelley has crossed the country and toured Europe several times as a headlining artist, sharing shows with the likes of Jake Xerxes Fussell, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Doug Paisley, Daniel Martin Moore, the Other Years, and Michael Hurley. She has opened for Wilco, Chris Smither, Andrew Bird, and Richard Thompson. Jeff Tweedy produced her previous record at The Loft in Chicago. She'll be familiar to readers of guitar-centric magazines for having appeared, in the same season, on the covers of Fretboard Journal and Acoustic Guitar. She'll be doubtless more familiar to more listeners in the wake of Like the River Loves the Sea.Smoke free. All ages. Wheelchair accessible.Special needs seating call (414) 286-3205.All sales final. + special guest Horror My FriendThe growth that Hockey Dad have experienced over the past 18 months has been no accident. The fast-paced, punk style of the drums is executed in perfect synchronicity with jangly guitar, anthemic choruses and ever confident vocals, giving life to their unmistakable and infectious brand of rock-pop. After the release of their 2018 album, 'Boronia,' the duo embarked on sold out tours across Australia and extensively through North America, including showcases at SXSW and shows alongside Dune Rats and Wavves in some of the country's biggest venues - a world away from the 70 cap band room where Hockey Dad first cut their teeth.
Brisbane, Australia-based dancy punks DZ Deathrays combine buzzsaw guitar riffs with fiery, party-ready rhythms. Fittingly, the group formed in 2008, intent on exclusively playing house parties. Word soon got out and they grew to the rock club circuit, later touring with the likes of Crystal Castles, Ratatat and even opening for the Foo Fighters in Australia.Smoke free. All ages. PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
With special guest: Dan TedescoWhen problem solving, the process of trial and error can be effective but frustrating. This has been singer-songwriter Patrick Park's experience with recording music - exhausting all the sonic possibilities of a song, before finally succumbing to the ebb and flow of the creative process.
After wrapping up the tour for his 2014 album, Love Like Swords, the weight of touring alone in a van for months, partnered with the financial realities of being a musician, began to take its toll. Park turned to writing songs for other artists, but, despite having success, he wasn't receiving creative fulfillment from the routine. After finding solace from existential dread through meditation and working a suicide hotline counselor, Park began to write music for himself again, and thus, his 2019 album 'Here/Gone' was born. With many of the songs materializing as letters to his then-unborn son and aural reckonings with the brevity of life, the album encapsulates the incessant urge to chase things in life that only bring a fleeting sense of fulfillment - and how sometimes, the most substantial form of fulfillment comes from simply letting go.Smoke free.
