PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Featuring twenty dancers accompanied by live musicians, the Gumboots and Pantsula Dance Companies share the Carpenter Theatre stage for an evening of exhilarating urban street dance that convey stories of hard work, human struggles, and a longing for a better life. Gumboots dancers, clad in Wellington boots, perform a dance style created by South African miners who used foot stomping as a means of communication when talking was prohibited during Apartheid. Established in 1992 by Sello Reuben Modiga, Pantsula dancers use hip-hop and breakdancing against a backdrop of house music to express social issues.

Join the Modlin Center for the Arts for Modlin Arts After Words, a post-show question-and-answer session following each performance in the dance series.

Artistic Viewpoint
Join directors of The Gumboots and Pantsula Dance Companies for a pre-performance discussion at 6:30pm in lieu of Modlin Arts After Words.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
If the phrase “male a cappella group” conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses... think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. They have emerged as a phenomenon with a massive fanbase, numerous national TV appearances and proven success with CD releases. Straight No Chaser is the real deal, the captivating sound of nine unadulterated human voices coming together to make extraordinary music that is moving people in a fundamental sense... and with a sense of humor. On the road, Straight No Chaser has built a reputation as an unforgettable live act.

“Alton Brown Live: Eat Your Science,” the follow-up to the smash “Edible Inevitable” tour, hits the road again. Fans can expect all-new everything including songs, multimedia presentations, talk-show antics, and bigger and better potentially dangerous food demonstrations.

Brown has a knack for mixing together a perfect base of science, music and food into two hours of pure entertainment. Critics and fans alike have raved about the interactive components of Brown’s shows. He promises “plenty of new therapy inducing opportunities during our audience participation segments. I don’t want to give too much away, but this time we’re going to play a little game while we’re at it. Plus, you’ll see things I’ve never been allowed to do on TV.” He’s also contemplating more sophisticated protective gear for folks in the first few rows…just in case things get messy…again.

PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
“[Tan Dun’s] language, a mix of Hollywood grandeur and primal, percussive vitality, was consistent throughout the evening, yet each segment had its own distinct sound.” —Sydney Morning Herald

Celebrate the Chinese New Year with a vibrant performance by the China National Symphony Orchestra that blends sounds from East and West and includes imagery from multiple sources including the China National Shadow Puppet Theatre. Renowned composer, conductor, and Honorary Artistic Director Tan Dun will take the podium for this special evening. Dun has transcended stylistic and cultural boundaries to become one of the world’s most famous composers. Stravinsky’s Fireworks and The Firebird will serve as bookends to works by Guan Xia and Dun, including Dun’s The Martial Arts Trilogy, based on his Academy Award-winning scores for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero and Dun’s Passacaglia: Secret of Wind and Birds.

Artistic Viewpoint
Join artistic director and conductor Tan Dun at 6:30 PM for a pre-performance discussion.

Fully renovated and restored, the historic Carpenter Theatre is the cornerstone of the Dominion Arts Center. It features state-of-the-art lighting and world-class acoustics while still preserving its Old World feel. Its large stage, great acoustics and 20 dressing rooms make it a performer’s dream venue. Carpenter Theatre’s main lobby includes two refreshment bars and a concierge station, with two additional refreshment bars upstairs. Four large mosaic tile murals of parrots serve as the backdrop to the four refreshment bars and are a tribute to the handmade parrot that has been perched in the lobby since the theater first opened in 1928. Upon entering the refurbished Carpenter Theatre - with nearly 1,800 seats - audiences enjoy newly installed fiber optic stars twinkling overhead in the repainted midnight sky ceiling, one of the many preserved and enhanced elements of John Eberson's original theater design.
