Our return to the stage delves into Igor Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat, a work of adaptation born from an immense struggle.  It’s a work that emerged near the end of World War I and the 1918 pandemic during a time when Stravinsky’s large ballets were not able to be performed.  We partner with Shasta College Theatre in a telling of this remarkable tale of a common soldier who, on leave from the troops, trades in his scratched violin for a promise of riches.  Unknowingly making a deal with the devil, this story addresses the universal question that everyone eventually asks themselves:  what makes us really happy?

Easton Corbin exudes country. His distinctive baritone has been gracing airwaves for the past decade as his chart topping debut single “A Little More Country Than That” established Corbin as a mainstay on the country charts. Billboard’s 2010 Top New Country Artist would go on to garner another No. 1 hit with the feel-good “Roll With It” as well as seven top 10 singles, further distinguishing himself from other male vocalists as a tried-and-true country traditionalist who weaves timeless story songs together while tipping his hat to the classic country artists who have come before him.

“That’s what I love and that’s what I do,” he says of his passion for traditional country music. “For me, it's about keeping one foot in the traditional and one foot in the modern and marrying those two. I’m a country singer: That's one of the things that I take pride in. I try to hone that craft and try to represent that.”

For fans of his late, legendary father, country music great Merle Haggard, his youngest son Ben Haggard is no Stranger – in fact, he’s been the lead guitarist in Hag’s longtime band of the same name for the past eight years, since he was 15 years old, fitting in easily with veterans like musical director Norm Hamlet and Scott Joss.

When asked what his own musical personality might be, Ben admits, like his father, he feels like a bit of an outsider when it comes to contemporary country music.

“I couldn’t really go out there and sing about drinking a beer on a tailgate under the moonlight,” he laughs. “I want to sing about things I value within my heart. Honesty is always pushing against the grain, in a way. My dad always said it’s easier to force-feed people something they don’t want than actually giving them what they do.”

For Ben Haggard, this is just the beginning of his artistic journey, and he still has plenty of places to go, but he looks well-prepared to kick out the footlights in his own right.

Come see Ben and his brother Noel Haggard play at the Cascade Theatre on October 12th!

Robert William Cray (born August 1, 1953) is an American blues guitarist and singer. He has led his own band and won five Grammy Awards. One music journalist noted "If you define 'blues' by the rigid categories of structure rather than the flexible language of feeling allusion, Robert Cray... Larry Garner, Joe Louis Walker and James Armstrong are a new and uncategorizable breed, their music blues-like rather than blues, each of them blending ideas and devices from a variety of sources – soul, rock, jazz, gospel – with a sophistication beyond the reach of their forerunners". Robert Cray was born on August 1, 1953, in Columbus, Georgia, while his father was stationed at Fort Benning.

The magnificent melodic elegance of Mozart is on display when NSS Principal Flute Tim Koop and Principal Harp Candace LiVolsi share an age-old dialogue that suggests a conversation between a father and a daughter in the Concerto for Flute and Harp.  The program is centered around the “Titan” Symphony of Gustav Mahler.  Despite the reduction of forces, this version of this outstanding symphony will not fail to stir the soul and leave you with a determined sense that anguish and loneliness can be banished and the human spirit will triumph.  The program begins with Jessie Montgomery’s Banner, a work commissioned in 2014 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Star Spangled Banner.

Postmodern Jukebox, also widely known by the acronym PMJ, is a rotating musical collective founded by arranger and pianist Scott Bradlee in 2011. PMJ is known for reworking popular modern music into different vintage genres, especially early 20th century forms such as swing and jazz. Postmodern Jukebox has amassed over 1 billion YouTube views and 3.4 million subscribers. Each week, Postmodern Jukebox puts out a new video on YouTube. Although originally most were filmed casually in Bradlee's living room, sets became more elaborate over time. On February 24, 2016, Postmodern Jukebox opened at the Dubai Jazz Festival, alongside Sting, Toto, Chris Botti, and David Gray. The 2016 tours included three continents: 1) a 75-date European tour at Vicar Street in Dublin, Ireland, wrapping on June 3, 2016 in Athens, Greece. 2) A 16-city Australia/New Zealand tour, which kicked off on August 29, 2016 at the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch, wrapping on September 20, 2016 at the Perth Concert Hall. and 3) a 45-stop fall North American tour, kicking off on September 29, 2016 at the Vets in Providence, Rhode Island, and wrapping on November 27, 2016 in Mesa, Arizona. The 2017 tour included concurrent dates in Europe and the USA, with two separate "casts" of musicians. PMJ made its first visit of South America in August 2017, with four dates in Brazil and one in Argentina. In April 2018, PMJ made their debut in Africa, performing in Tunisia at the Jazz a Carthage Festival and Morocco at the Jazzablanca Festival, marking the sixth continent on which they've performed.

The Mavericks, the eclectic rock and country group known for crisscrossing musical boundaries with abandon, has gone through three distinct phases since it was founded in Miami in 1989. An initial period of heady success marked by big hits and critical acclaim in the ‘90s. A long hiatus starting 2003 when the musicians each went their own way. And finally, a triumphant reunion in 2012 which held long enough for them to recently celebrate the band’s 30th anniversary. “It's like we've had three different lives,” says Raul Malo, the band’s lead singer and songwriter, “and now this is a whole new beginning. We’re sort of going into uncharted territory. I’m looking forward to it and I’m kind of nervous about it too. It's certainly a new adventure.”

Eleven-time Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Jamey Johnson is “one of the greatest country singers of our time,” according to the Washington Post. He is one of only a few people in the history of country music to win two Song of the Year Awards from both the CMA and ACMs.  His 2008 album, That Lonesome Song, was certified platinum for 1 million in sales, and his 2010 ambitious double album, The Guitar Song, received a gold certification.  In addition, he won two Song of the Year Trophies, for “Give It Away” and “In Color,” both from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association. He has received tremendous praise from The New York Times, Rolling Stone,  The Wall Street Journal and other publications, many of which have  hailed his albums as masterpieces.  In 2012, the Alabama native released his fifth studio album, a tribute project to late songwriter Hank Cochran. The Grammy-nominated Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran paired him with Willie Nelson, Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris, Ray Price, Elvis Costello, George Strait, Vince Gill and Merle Haggard.  In 2013, the Nashville Scene’s 13th annual Country Music Critics’ Poll named it the year’s best album. (Two years earlier, the same poll named Johnson’s The Guitar Song as the year's best album, and Johnson himself as best male vocalist, best songwriter and artist of the year.)

Over the last four decades, Béla Fleck has made a point of boldly going where no banjo player has gone before, a musical journey that has earned him 15 Grammys in nine different fields, including Country, Pop, Jazz, Instrumental, Classical and World Music. But his roots are in bluegrass, and that’s where he returns with his first bluegrass tour in 24 years, My Bluegrass Heart.

My Bluegrass Heart is the third chapter of a trilogy which began with the 1988 album, Drive, and continued in 1991 with The Bluegrass Sessions. The second tour for the project features a who's who of some of the greatest instrumentalists in bluegrass music’s history. Sometimes known as the Telluride House Band, sometimes as the Drive Band, containing four fifths of Strength in Numbers, half of New Grass Revival, and half of Goat Rodeo, these musicians have been intertwining in a myriad of ways since the early 1980’s and all have been major movers in the forward progression of acoustic music to the present day.

We are talking, of course, about mandolinist Sam Bush, fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer, and Bryan Sutton on guitar. and dobro master and super-collaborator Jerry Douglas!!

'I’m thrilled to be reunited with my brothers and lifelong collaborators, it has been way too long since we have toured together. And I love their contributions to My Bluegrass Heart. They are the heart of the album!’ say’s Béla.

A favorite holiday tradition, Tomáseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas returns to the Cascade Theatre with all new stories, music and dances that celebrate Irish culture and the giving spirit of Christmas. A Celtic Christmas recreates the joy and innocence of a night before Christmas in a remote farmhouse in the west of Ireland–when the neighboring families gather around the fire to grace the wintry night with the melodies of traditional Irish Christmas carols, to knock sparks off the flagstone floor with fiery dances, and to fill the night with the laughter of their stories.

Mendelssohn took a trip to Scotland and wrote the opening of the Hebrides Overture.  Giovanni Bottesini was inspired by the depth, versatility, and sheer power of the double bass.  Jean Sibelius was moved by a play by Maurice Maeterlinck and its themes of forbidden love, subsequently writing some of the most picturesque and charming incidental music.  Maurice Ravel served in the French Army in World War I and later wrote Le Tombeau de Couperin as a gentle tribute to the victims of the war.  Join us as we explore inspiration and its many forms featuring acclaimed double bassist Kurt Muroki and a special side-by-side with the youth orchestras of Chico and Redding.

Brian Joseph Regan (born June 2, 1958) is an American stand-up comedian who uses observational, sarcastic, and self-deprecating humor. His performances are clean as he refrains from profanity and off-color humor. Regan's material typically covers everyday events, such as shipping a package with UPS, mortgages, and visits to the optometrist. While he does not define himself as youth-oriented, Regan makes frequent references to childhood, including little league baseball, grade school spelling bees, and science projects. Body language and facial expressions make his stand-up act atypically physical.
